Vintage Seiko divers, a world of their own
The vintage dive watch market has been dominated by one brand for over fifty years: Seiko. Not because it's the most expensive, nor the most talked-about, but because it has always offered a price-to-quality ratio nobody else has matched. From our workshop in Herstal, near Liège, we see dozens of Seiko divers pass through every year. Here are the five references we recommend for starting a collection without going over €500.
1. Seiko SKX007, the absolute reference

Produced from 1996 to 2019, the SKX007 is probably the best-selling dive watch in history. 42 mm case, automatic 7S26 calibre, 200 m water resistance, unidirectional rotating bezel. Examples in good condition go for between €200 and €350 on the Belgian market.
2. Seiko SKX009 Pepsi, the two-tone icon

Same base as the SKX007, but with the red and blue bezel that made its name. It goes with anything, in any circumstance. Expect €250 to €400 for a verified original example at Charlemagne Watches in Liège.
3. Seiko 7002, the rugged ancestor

Produced between 1988 and 1996, it introduced the case that would become the SKX's. The 7002 calibre is reliable and easy to service. Prices sit around €150 to €300.
4. Seiko 6309, the charm of the 1970s-80s

The 6309 is the Seiko diver of the years 1976 to 1988. Two variants: the 6309-7040 "Turtle" with its cushion case, and the more classic 6309-7290. Typical price: €200 to €450.
5. Seiko 7548, the indestructible quartz diver

For those who don't swear only by mechanical movements, the 7548 is a quartz diver from the 1980s. Solid case, 150 m water resistance. Still under €200 in Belgium.
